How Often Do You Need a Denture Reline?
How often do you need a denture reline depends on how quickly and often your gums change.
When wearing dentures your gums will shrink especially after your teeth have been extracted, then it’s time for a denture reline. The reline adds a liner to your dentures to help keep them in place and fill in the voids between your denture and gums.
You can also get your dentures relined if your hard dentures are causing sore spots and rubbing on your gums. Sore spots can make it very difficult to wear dentures. A soft reline or tissue conditioner can make wearing relined denture much more comfortable.
A home soft denture reline kit is quite affordable and can be done whenever you need it. The price for a DIY denture liner and a denture reline done at the dentist is very different. For example, a home denture reliner costs anywhere from $5 to $29. Some last a few weeks, while others like our Perma Soft Denture Reliner kit lasts up to TWO years. A reline at the dentist office runs anywhere from $250 to $300. There may be lower costs and sometimes the first denture reline is free, depending on your dentist.
When you are unsure of how often you need a denture reline, ask yourself these questions:
- Are my dentures loose?
- Do I have sore spots on my gums?
- Can I afford a denture reliner?
- Will I be able to remove the denture liner once applied?
The above questions will help you answer your question about how you often you should reline your dentures.
Furthermore, if your not wearing your dentures at all because they are a nightmare and cause you pain and suffering, then it might be a good idea to have them relined by purchasing a home denture reliner or a reline by your dentist.
As far as removal of a denture reline, one done by your dentist would be for a dental visit and home denture reline kit can usually be easily removed by running hot water over the edges of the reliner and pulling back slowly the attached material with tweezers. The hot water will help loosen the liner and pulling slowly will help keep it intact so it doesn’t tear away and will in turn make it smoother removal process.
What are the benefits of wearing a reline denture?
- When wearing a relined denture you can eat the foods you once enjoyed before wearing dentures.
- A denture liner will give you more confidence because your denture won’t fall down while you speak.
- Your gums will thank you for it by relieving the irritation the hard plastic denture can cause when rubbing against your gums.
Which denture reliner is best for me?
- You may need to experiment with different types of relines. You may want to experiment with different types of relines because what works for one person may not work for the next person. Some people prefer a soft denture reline kit, while others prefer a hard reline kit that lasts much longer.
- When getting a reline at your dentist, he/she will be able to determine which denture liner would work best for your individual circumstance.
Will a home denture reline kit replace a denture reline from my dentist?
- Probably not. Your dentist will have the right tools and equipment to decide which type of reliner is best for you in order to achieve a proper-fitting denture. But, until you can see your dentist a denture reline kit for home use will suffice.
Will a denture reline eliminate the need for over-the-counter denture adhesives?
Hopefully, but honestly, that’s not always the case. Many times, you’ll still need to use a denture adhesive after you have had your denture relined, whether at home or by your dentist. However, not all adhesives work well with the reline material in your dentures. Harder or firm denture reliners, like our Perma Soft Denture Reline Kit work well with adhesives if needed, which you shouldn’t have to use once the Perma Soft is applied to the denture. Some prefer powder denture adhesive and this type of adhesive works well with our ProSoft Denture Reliner and can be applied several times a day or whenever you need suction and secure-fitting dentures.
Benefits of a Relined Denture are outlined below:
- Improved Mood Not being able to wear your dentures may cause some anxiety and depression. Not being able to eat hard foods or let alone smile can be very detrimental to your mental state. Just getting the satisfaction of eating peanuts or crunchy food without pain can be make one feel ecstatic as well as euphoria. Your favorite food can be a comfort and without being able to eat it, one might feel hopeless. Don’t worry, though. Once your dentures are refitted with a denture liner, you will have the chance to be happy again. Don’t let wearing dentures get you down. Just try to think of the positive effects that wearing dentures have brought you. For example, if you had rotting teeth, the pain is gone. Or if going around toothless was embarrassing and humiliating, now you have beautiful smile that you are wiling to share.
- Social Interactions A well-fitting denture will give you the confidence you need when situations involving social interactions occur. You won’t be concerned with the though of you denture slipping while you speak or even fall down to your lower denture plate.
- Comfort and Stability Once your dentures are relined, you will no longer have to worry about your slippage which can cause sore gums. You will be able to be able to wear your dentures with the comfort and support needed for a great-fitting denture.
- Less Gum Shrinkage Unfortunately, your gums will go through a lot of changes with dentures. The study below explains how a soft denture reliner will help with gum loss:
Department of Removable Prosthodontics, School of Dentistry,
University of Tokushima, Japan.
“This study examined the effect of a soft denture liner on the
distribution of stresses in the denture-supporting structures.
Dentures without a linear and with three configurations of a soft
liner were simulated by using a two-dimensional viscoelastic
finite-element stress analysis. The stress intensity at functional
force-bearing areas decreased when a soft denture liner was used.
However, the stresses in the bone increased remarkably up to 3.0
seconds after loading. Because of the time-dependent effect of
stresses applied to soft denture liners, denture patients who
clench or brux may not benefit as greatly from soft denture liners.
The study indicates that viscoelastic finite-element analysis is
helpful for evaluating soft denture liners. Soft denture liners
appear to be useful for improving the stress distribution in the
supporting structures under dentures and in turn causing less gum
loss”
In conclusion, when choosing how often to reline your dentures, always speak with your dentist. He/she knows best, but if you cannot get to a dentist or you can’t afford a dentist at the time a reline is needed, then home denture reline kits will get the job done until you can visit your dentist.
